St. John's

St. John's Holidays

North America's oldest city, St John's is an exciting and colourful coastal town on the edge of the Atlantic. With a strong Irish heritage, some of the local accents sound as if they are from our own emerald isle!

Things to Do in St John's

  • Signal Hill National Historic Site is one of the most famous landmarks in Newfoundland. This historic site celebrates the rich communications and military history of Signal Hill and sits amidst a spectacular view of St. John’s and the sea. Signal Hill was the reception point of the first transatlantic wireless signal by Guglielmo Marconi in 1901, as well as the site of harbour defences for St. John’s from the 18th century to the Second World War.
  • The Quidi Vidi Brewery crafts 8 brands of award-winning beer, including one brewed exclusively from iceberg water! Book a tour if you like the sound of sampling a few glasses of beer whilst learning about its fascinating history.
  • St. John’s is known for its vibrant colourful row houses which help shape the city’s character. Walk pretty much anywhere in the downtown area and you will experience the colourful houses – starting at the top of a hill, you will see Jellybean Row decorated with a colourful variety of houses all the way down to the sea.

Best Time to Visit

June–September: This is the main tourist season in Newfoundland, as the weather is usually at its most pleasant. Temperatures typically range from 20°C, with temperatures being lower in the spring months and increasing in the summer months to the high 20’s.

Late April through May is ideal for iceberg watching, which can run into June and July, in and around the St. John’s area. Summertime is ideal for whale watching! Come view the largest concentration of humpback whales in the world and in fact, 22 species of mammal life that grace our waters. Take a boat tour to get up close and personal.

September–October: The autumn in St. John’s is a crisper version of the summer months, with average temperatures around 12°C to the high teens – great for a round of golf or a hike. The East Coast Trail has 26 paths along the coastline just perfect to see the fall foliage changing colours.

Take a day to tour the quirky little fishing village of Quidi Vidi. You can visit the Quidi Vidi Plantation whichi is a creative hub for hand-crafted arts of all sorts, from pottery to handmade jewellery. Quidi Vidi Lake is also the home to the Royal St. John’s Regatta each summer, a sporting event more than 200 years in the making!
