Climb Mt Kilimanjaro- Machame Route

Climb Mt Kilimanjaro- Machame Route
As the highest point in Africa, and the tallest freestanding mountain in the world, Mt Kilimanjaro is rightfully one of the continent’s most iconic landmarks.  Also known as the “Whiskey Route”, the Machame Route attracts roughly 50% of all climbers, and offers incredible views of the Tanzanian countryside, and Kilimanjaro National Park.

What makes Mt Kilimanjaro special is that technical climbing skills are not needed to reach the summit. A good level of fitness, the right clothing and a fondness for camping are all that’s needed to climb to the icy peaks 5,895m above ground.

You’ll get to spend your first and last night in the Moshi Springlands Hotel, located ideally close to the mountain, it is the preferred base for many climbers. The comforts of a soft bed and a warm shower cannot be overstated after completing your journey.

Climbing Kilimanjaro Highlights

  • This might be the most obvious highlight, but reaching the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro is a truly special moment. For people of all levels of climbing experience, looking across the vast plains of Tanzania knowing you are standing above an entire continent is unforgettable.
  • Giving yourself time to acclimatise to the altitude is hugely important. The Machame Route has a very high success rate, which is impressive considering how many people take it each year.
  • Planning your climb around the time of the full moon can make the experience even more special. It not only makes your summit day easier to have brighter nights, but having the moon shining on your back as you climb makes for some fantastic memories.

Our opinion

Andre - “I’ve climbed Kili twice myself, and it is truly the challenge of a lifetime. Because it’s a non-technical climb, it’s open to most people of reasonable fitness. Towering over the plains of Kenya and Tanzania, those who reach Uhuru Peak can see with their own eyes the dawn rising over Africa.”
