Zambia is the birthplace of the walking safari and home of the original wild Africa experience. Boasting stunning natural wonders and world renowned national parks with diverse wildlife, a Zambia safari is the perfect choice for wildlife enthusiasts.
One of the Seven Wonders of the World, Victoria Falls, is found in Zambia and this country also boasts the largest mammal migration in the world. Take a helicopter ride over the falls and admire the breath taking scenery or witness the phenomenon that is the Bat migration of Kasanka National Park.
Zambia Safari Attractions
- Livingstone Island is worth heading to whilst at the falls, as swimming the famous Devil’s Pool is a truly thrilling experience. Mukuni Big Five lets you encounter wildlife like lion and cheetah on an elephant-back safari!
- Near Victoria Falls is the wonderful Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, where you can track the incredibly rare white rhino on foot. The park is also home to a healthy population of elephant, buffalo, giraffe and zebra.
- With Kafue National Park, you’ll be able to explore Zambia’s largest national park, and one of the biggest in Africa. Covering such a massive area (roughly the size of Belgium!), and teeming with wildlife, it is a great chance to experience an authentic Zambia safari.
- Kasanka National Park is home to the largest mammal migration in the world, when over 8 million bats descend on the area. From October to December you can witness this event, when the nocturnal creatures feed on the local musuku fruit.
Best time to visit
May - November is the dry season in Zambia. Due to the scarcity of water at this time of year, animals are easier to spot as they are usually gathered around water sources. The shrubbery has also thinned out, once again making it easier to spot wildlife. The bat migration of Kasanka also starts in October.
The climate from May-August is comfortable, with daily temperatures usually between 14-26 degrees. Temperatures increase dramatically from September - November. The mercury is known the reach the mid 40 degrees. A Zambia safari is great at this time of year, if you can handle the heat, as water supplies are at their lowest. However, Victoria Falls is not quite as special during this period.
December - April is Zambia's wet season. This is not a good time to go on a safari holiday as a lot of the seasonal camps are closed and visiting remote areas is very difficult. However, if you are an avid birdwatcher, visiting at this time of year is a must as many species of bird migrate to Zambia during these months.
